Wastage The horses you see on the track are a very lucky few. In fact, thousands of racehorses are bred and discarded of each year – both horses who lack ability to compete in racing and those retired or injured. These horses do not see the compassion they deserve and the majority are sent to knackeries where they’re killed for dog meat, or one of two abattoirs in Australia that slaughter horses for human consumption. The cruelty knows no bounds, whether it’s an injured prizewinner or under-performing thoroughbred, the racing industry is undoubtedly the largest contributor to the slaughter of horses in Australia with approximately 300 of every 1000 horses bred actually making it to the track.
