Discover sightseeing spot in Kumamoto Prefecture This week, we drive around Kumamoto – known as the country of fire – in Kyushu. We will visit various attractions and sightseeing spots in the area, such as relaxing hot springs and beautiful waterfalls. Our first destination is Aso, an hour’s drive from Kumamoto city. Head towards Aso Shrine, a traditional village shrine. The town in front of the shrine is famous for its hot springs, traditionally called “God Springs”. The hot spring water can be drunk too. Another tourist spot is a former dressmaking school which was built in 1912. There are cafes and shops inside the old school building now where you could get white rice balls, a chilled dessert with soybean flour and brown syrup, and flowing soumen.
