Watch Puerto Rico All are medal contenders but none can afford any lapses of concentration if a podium finish is to be attained. In recent years the standard of play in Latin America has risen but two countries have made more progress than any other, Brazil and Puerto Rico. In Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico is led by a young man in form; the Caribbean island is led by17 year old Brian Afanador. He is the reigning Latin American Junior Boys’ Singles champion and at the recent Latin American Youth Olympic Games Qualification Tournament, staged the same hall as the forthcoming ITTF-Latin American Championships he booked his place in Nanjing without surrendering a single individual game! Brian Afanador lines up alongside Daniel Gonzalez, Hector Berrios and Richard Pietri; gold may be a step too far but don’t be surprised if they clinch silver or bronze in the Men’s Team event. Welcome to a New Name Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Venezuela have all enjoyed international success; they are familiar names especially in Latin American circles. However there is one newcomer to the scene, a national association officially accepted as a member of the International Table Tennis Federation at the Annual General Meeting staged in Shanghai in 2005. It is welcome to Saint Kitts and Nevis; they compete in the Men’s Team event. Beneficiaries of ITTF Development Programme The Caribbean islands have been beneficiaries of the extensive ITTF Development Programme. In 2008 Costa Rica’s Fernando Aguilar visited conduct a Basic Umpires Course; whilst in 2010 and 2011, Switzerland’s Georg Silberschmidt went beyond the call of duty. He thought there was no better place to spend his holidays than by leading ITTF Level One Coach Education Courses in Saint Kitts and Nevis! Calvin Lake, Andre Freeman, Tanje Johnson and Craig Mcdowell form the Saint Kitts and Nevis Team.
