Jay Matteson, Jefferson County Agricultural Coordinator and host of the Home Grown Show since its inception, is excited to reach out to a broader audience. According to Matteson, “we’ve been available via the internet in the past and received a pretty good response from people across New York State.” “We were even recognized by former Governor David Patterson for our contributions to increasing public awareness about ag issues”, Matteson added, saying “now, if someone wants to, they can watch and or listen to the show if they can’t pick it up directly when we air on Saturday mornings.” “Al Walts, my co-host and show producer, and I, look forward to the increased opportunity to bring the exciting world of agriculture to people wherever they may be listening” Mr. Matteson finished. The show has been popular in the North Country. Jay said he regular receives feedback from people across the listening spectrum including school nurses, operating room nurses, elected officials, carpenters, corrections officers, soldiers, and of course, farmers. Matteson tells the story of one of the Home Grown Show’s regular guests going into Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown for minor surgery and having the person voice recognized by the operating room nurses from the show. “Ron, who comes on the Show regularly to give dairy industry updates, told me he’s lying on the bed waiting for surgery talking to the nurses. One of them asks Ron if he’s been on the radio before, his voice sounds familiar. Ron tells the ladies yes, he’s been on The Home Grown Show a few times. They said they have the show on there in post operating frequently”, Jay said adding, “Ron and I laughed about it, but it was neat to hear we are reaching the people the show is targeting, the non-farm public.” The Home Grown Show focuses on telling agricultures story to the public. Sometimes the information is critical to farmers, but even then, Al and Jay try to portray the information in a way that will be interesting to everyone. Remember, you can tune in Saturday mornings at 6am on 790 WTNY or starting Monday mornings at 9am on gnuvision. ###
