Watch carefully - O Sensei is not using a staff (a jo or bo), but a nuboko - a spear. It symbolizes the Ame no Nuboko (Heavenly Juweled Spear) that was used by Izanagi no Okami and Izanami no Okami standing on the Ame no Ukihashi (floating bridge between heaven an earth) to create the first land Onogoro shima. Izanagi and Izanami then descended from the bridge of heaven and made their home on the island using the Ame no nuboko as the central pillar of their house (1). It forms the pillar of their wedding ceremony; the circling of the pillar. From their union (musubi) a great number of children were born. The story was very important to O Sensei - it not only tells about the origin of Japan, but of the creative force that arises when heaven and earth meet. In fact it describes the secret of Aiki.
