Watch the Shadows is the title track on my new album. I designed - TopicsExpress

Watch the Shadows is the title track on my new album. I designed this track to have a robot driven sort of feel, but in a 1980’s sense. The synth solo midway through was played by Jasia-10, he was absolutely referencing the Knight Rider theme. To me that’s the most classic future-funk riff of all time. Still 80’s but at the same time very computer generated. I got the lyrics “Dream the sweetest dream, and watch the shadows” from a song I heard on an old jazz record by Bill Henderson. “The Lamp Is Low” which was originally written by Peter DeRose and Bert Shefter and uses the exact melody from “Pavane pour use infante défunte” by Maurice Ravel. Ravel admits the song was unduly influenced by the music of Chabrier who claimed to have taken a lot of his musical ideas from Pablo Sarasate and older spanish folk music… etc. So here I am in 2014 reappropriating a piece of music and tracing the development of it all the way back to the 1600’s. This has me visualizing music as a conversation between us and our past, or even our future. One of the most fascinating things about music is how it evolves through different regions, cultures and eras. Its the universal language of the human spirit.
