Watch this video. The cops tackle the guy on the porch in order to stop him from videotaping their conduct. They then try to grab a womans camera who is videotaping their assault on the guy with the camera-phone. This is madness. Everyone of these cops should be charged with assault. The law is clear, you have a right to videotape uniformed cops doing their job. But police forces across the globe and throughout the United States routinely assault people videotaping their conduct, often smashing their phones of cameras, physically injuring them and then arrest them for either interfering with the police, resisting arrest or or they have the nerve to turn it around and charge the civilian victim with assaulting an officer. We have an obligation, in every town and city, to organize to push back against growing police brutality and interference with our civil liberties. It is getting worse. And within police departments, such behavior is regarded as acceptable. This has to stop. In Hawaii. And in Honolulu specifically. Where do our elected city official stand on this? The Mayor, the councilmembers, should all be contacted, in light of what happened in Ferguson, what controls are in place to prevent the militarization of our police force? What is the HPD policy towards officers who interfere with the right of civilians to video-record their behavior? Honolulu has very weak civilian control over our police force. The mayor and councilmembers,as well as most state legislators, are fearful of offending them and their union, SHOPO. There was an incident on Hawaii island, in Pahoa, a couple of years ago where the cops smashed the smartphone of an activist/journalist who was videotaping them dealing with a late night fight outside a bar. So it is not limited to Oahu.
