Watched 12 Years A Slave at Sandton City last night. What a tale! - TopicsExpress

Watched 12 Years A Slave at Sandton City last night. What a tale! The most remarkable thing about this movie - for me at least - was that this very American story was told, largely, by non-Americans: from the director (Steve McQueen, who is West Indian); to the lead actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is Nigerian of British upbringing), down to the supporting actress (Lupeta Nyongo, who is from Kenya). I smell an Oscar here. Now I must get the book and read, and compare. I was nervous about taking my daughter Malaika (12) with, but now I dont regret. On the way home, she was pelting me with questions about slavery and apartheid, and if there were any similarities. Its a story our children must know about, harsh and graphic as it can be sometimes. The acting (Lupeta and Ejiofor) is to die for; the cinematography is top drawer. And, ah, yes, Brad Pitt (who happens to be the producer) makes a cameo as a kind-hearted Canadian who rescues the Ejiofor character. As I said, I smell at least one Oscar here
