Watched Pinocchio (2002 film) off of Xfinity on Demand earlier today. Knowing how successful Roberto Benigni was with his film Life Is Beautiful, it seemed like he had great potential to keep that streak going. Unfortunately, for his take on the classic story of Pinocchio, thats not the case. His version of the tale has a pretty confusing way of telling it, even though it does follow the original story pretty closely at times. The biggest problem with it, though, is the way it has a lot of talking and constant noise the whole time. Its like its afraid that if it stopped all the talking and noise, its going to lose the childrens attention, which isnt necessarily a good thing; children need pauses and quiet moments in order for them to understand patience and the appreciation of atmosphere in a film, which this one sorely lacks. It doesnt even take the time to establish the characters, which many of them turn out to be pretty annoying and, thus, unlikable. The version I saw was the original Italian dub, and Im sure Miramaxs English dub is just about as ear-gratingly bad. With all that said, its enough to call Roberto Benignis version about the little wooden boy as a very annoying one. My rating: 4 out of 10.
