Watched Rise of the Fourth Reich (on Youtube) in bed last night. Was both good and crap at the same time. Now how is that possible? Well on the one hand you met a journalist which set out to prove that the ODESSA organization existed, and showed how Mengele and others escaped through Austria into Italy, and how he managed to get a passport in a fake name with the help of a Parish Priest who was sympathetic to the Nazis. Great show until then, good journalism/research, which showed paperwork in Austria which showed an investigation into the existence of ODESSA three years before Simon Wiesenthal (famous Nazi hunter) told the world about its existence. Then it got utter crap, and alleged that the skull of Martin Bormann found in Germany (in 1972), exactly where an eye-witness said hed saw his corpse in 1945, had been placed there recently after hed lived until 1959 in Paraguay. Just seemed really contrived and unbelievable at that point. Either it wasnt Bormanns skull and he did indeed escape to Paraguay, or it was his skull and he never escaped Berlin, but either way it seemed ridiculous to imagine that they dug up his corpse in Paraguay (as the show claims) and secretly buried it in a Berlin street again. Nothing is conclusive on ODESSA, on whether the ODESSA files was a complete work of fiction, but we can at least conclude that this is pretty much how they got out of Germany. [Worth watching the documentary just for that.] Most unlikely that Bormann was amongst them. Still puts me in the mood for watching the old movie, The Odessa Files again. Was it just fiction? Maybe not.
