Watched The Monuments Men, which certainly tells a worthy and fascinating story, but really wastes a lot of potential, being sluggish and underdeveloped. The cast, however, is extraordinary; directed by, and starring George Clooney, and also featuring Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, and Bob Balaban. There is action and drama, along with comedy and tragedy, but not enough of any of them to make this especially compelling. The film focuses on an allied platoon sent to Germany near the end of WWII to locate, protect, and ultimately retrieve the various works of art that have been systematically plundered by the Nazis, during their occupation of Europe. I do agree with the fundamental message of just how important the role of art is to a society, and how devastating the loss of certain works would be to our collective cultural history as a people. But that is really about it.
