Watched The Shining miniseries on YouTube today. As someone who has never read the original book, there are some things in this version that does better than the Stanley Kubrick version in terms of development and storytelling (Stephen King did write the teleplay, after all). Both versions are just two different adaptations of the same story with different scopes and ideas. While the miniseries may not be as scary as the Kubrick one, it at least has a fairly decent pace, it explores more in the development of Jack Torrances character, and has some actual surprises and scares in stock. The only downsides are that some of the scares work, and yet some dont; not to mention that it has a lot of conversations and discussions that do drag out at times and weigh the viewing experience down. If the dialogue in some of the conversations and discussions were to have been trimmed down a little more, it would have worked fine that way. So if youre looking for a version that does well in its attempt to scare you, has memorable imagery, and allows opportunities for deep analysis and interpretation, watch the Kubrick version. If youre looking for a version that is a more faithful adaptation and is at least decent to watch, watch the miniseries. The miniseries, on the whole, is okay, though it does actually come close to being pretty good. My rating: 6 out of 10.
