Watched parts of this debate in the UK House of Commons - and some points that stand out are - The Boko Haram insurgency has displaced 1.5 million Nigerians, affected 3 million Nigerians and killed thousands of Nigerians - The Nigerian government spends 20% of its gross national income on defence - In the North-Eastern region a territorial area the size of Belgium is now in the hands of Boko Haram - The Nigerian government has not sought any official assistance from one of her closest partners - The Nigerian airforce has no surveillance aircraft so the country is dependent on the one that has been provided by the UK government. If the points above (extracted from the video) are to be believed - that 20% of the Nigerian governments budget is allocated to defence, then how on earth could the government under its watch - have lost parts of the country the size of Belgium? It beggars belief that 1.5 million people have now been displaced over the last few years in North-Eastern Nigeria but yet the government does not seem to recognise that the country is in a state of war. Possibly, because majority of the attacks have been restricted to NE Nigeria the government does not view this as a serious threat or maybe just does not care. This seems to have been confirmed in its actions (or inactions if you like) in handling the matter with kid gloves. Any credible government worth its salts with a conscience would see this scourge to be a clear and present danger to the entity of Nigeria that must be engaged head on with urgency, ruthlessness, decisiveness and efficiency. Why is the government not using every tool at its disposal to wage this war against Boko Haram apart from boots on the ground, have they genuinely - explored the legal option (to detain and prosecute those providing funding)? - sought assistance (from countries with greater technology abilities)? Incredibly, the presidency has a fleet of between 11 and 14 private jets to ferry the favoured around the nation (and possibly globe) yet the Nigerian Airforce has no surveillance aircraft - talk about misplaced priorities! Recently, during a fund raising event, I understand #21billion (Naira) was raised by corporate organisations and wealthy individuals to provide funding for the incumbents presidential campaign yet we have 1.5 million displaced Nigerians - talk about mans heartlessness to a fellow countryman! #ShineYourEyesVoteWisely
