Watched scoters for a few hours today at Prospect Lake in Colorado Springs, 18 November. There is much more ice today than the past few days but the afternoon winds and higher temperatures should open up a few more holes for the waterfowl. A Surf Scoter because it has a dark cap, the white extension of the mowhawk on the rear of its head and an unfeathered bill. Scoters do not appear to be vegans as I watched this one catch at least six crayfish with Gary Koehn.
