Watching Estaban Gutierrez car being lifted off track at yesterday mornings Free Practice 3 took me back to the sad events following last years Canadian GP. With 7 laps to go, Estaban Gutierrez hit the wall. Just after Seb Vettel won the race, the car was being craned back to the Sauber garage when marshal Mark Robinson dropped his radio and tripped when retrieving it. The crane ran over the volunteer marshal and he died later that night in hospital. He was 38 The work of marshals is not always seen, but it is vital to our sport and without their commitment, time and dedication, there would be no Motorsport. I am very, very sad to hear this news and my thoughts are with his family and friends. Sebastian Vettel Today there is nothing to celebrate. R.I.P, Fernando Alonso Although much has been made of improved driver safety in F1 (Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna were the last driver deaths in 1994) but three marshals have died since the turn of the century: Italian fire marshal Paolo Ghislimberti was hit by a wheel at Monza, Italy, in 2000 Graham Beveridge was killed by a tyre going through a gap in the safety fence at Albert Park, Australia, in 2001 Mark Robinson was run over by a crane in Montreal, Canada, in 2013 Over the 3 days this weekend, all marshals in Canada will wear black armbands as a mark of respect to Mark Robinson
