Watching Food Chains a film by Eric Schlosser and Eva Longoria. From the beginning their thesis is off, in the opening sequence Schlosser proposes that 1) grocers could end exploitation in the fields in a short amount of time and 2) that pennies more in retail prices at the point of sale would better the lives of farmworkers. As a scholar trained to examine industrialized agriculture it is clear, even here, that this film is going to focus on only one of several targets along the food chain and from the very beginning it is framed as if economics trickles down which as we have seen in tax breaks to the rich along with subsidies and incentives, this is not the way economies work. Capitalism is about accumulation, it is not about trickling down. more to come, likely on Karani first.
