Watching Sneakers for the 1,000th time. Yes, Im a sucker for anything early 90s. I remember as a wee lad seeing this incredible film in the theaters. In addition to taking my older brother and me to Broadway musicals like Starlight Express, Tommy, Phantom, my folks were really good about making sure we saw good films. Sneakers holds up in so many ways: from the sophisticated intro credits that play on the idea that words can be reassembled to suggest various meanings; to James Horners music; to a cast that includes Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Akyrod; River Phoneix; Ben Kingsley...and Mary McDonnell who is tough as nails (my kind of woman). And the central idea of the film: the idea that our lives are populated with too many secrets - state secrets as well as private secrets. End to end, its a perfect (post) Cold War bombshell: all the secrets of the new world can be hidden under a binary Iron curtain. Ill say it, Im a young/old man: I wish they still made films like this.
