Watching The 50 Year Argument - a Martin Scorsese documentary about the history of the New York Review of Books. Weird - Im very aware that Im watching the idolatry of words. Writers abstract reality and recreate it via the medium of words. Reviewers and literary critics abstract about the abstraction, and seem to feel quite clever and pleased with themselves for doing so. Imagine that the Isrealites of the Exodus couldnt handle God as an idea, so they set about making themselves a golden calf to worship. Now take it a step further - was there someone among the Hebrew masses who set himself the task of giving his opinion on golden calf idols, and will tell anyone who will listen what the strengths and flaws of the idol are. Weird.
