Watching The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes last night was a - TopicsExpress

Watching The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes last night was a disappointing experience, and it made me realize why I love the Granada series. Basil Rathbone is a decent Holmes, embodying the rationalist gentleman, and he looks very much like Pagets illustration. My problems are not with his performance, but everything else. Nigel Bruce is a talented actor, but his Watson is incompetent and obnoxious; you just dont bond with him, when you should connect with Watson as the representative of the audience. In fact, you dont connect with any of the characters except Holmes. And as wonderful as Sherlock Holmes is, hes not meant to carry a story all on his own. Holmesian stories derive their essence from peculiar characters, gripping situations and places. Adventures has a good story with Moriarty distracting Holmes with multiple cases, although I think Moriarty stealing the Crown Jewels is juvenile, but most of Universals Holmes films were cash-grab war-adventure films using Holmes as a marketing ploy. There are of course a few good mysteries, but I personally could not get excited about anything in this film.
