Watching The African Americans on PBS. Henry Louis Gates says - TopicsExpress

Watching The African Americans on PBS. Henry Louis Gates says black men have fought in every war America has engaged, suffering indignities and unappreciated each time, in an effort to demand full class citizenship. It is true. And he said it with pride. But what really does it mean for a people to subject ourselves to such sacrifices to prove our loyalty to a society that only counts us due to forced capture and dehumanizing enslavement? Should we be swollen with pride to assume ultimate sacrifice for a society that, even in 2014, cares little for any if its veterans muchless the black ones? History is the record of a peoples struggle to develop themselves and advance their best interests against all the odds confronting them, whether it is rugged terrain or foreign aggression.Interpretation of this record reflects the class position and loyalties of those recounting this record. Study history, but be vigilant against interpretations that may doom you to repeating it.
