Watching The Normal Heart on HBO. Its extremely difficult to watch. I was still in the closet in the 1980s but I remember having friends and clients who died of AIDS during that time. I remember patients at the hospital where I worked part-time who were covered in lesions and who wasted away until they died. I remember being a probation officer and seeing gay probationers being led into courtrooms by deputies wearing gloves and masks because they and the judges were scared shitless of all gay people. I remember shaking hands with an HIV-positive client in the late 80s and seeing him burst into tears because no one had shaken his hand in over a year. I remember talking with a chaplain at the jail who said they had to quarantine all the queers so they wouldnt infect everyone else with their sinful disease. This movie is bringing all of those memories back. Im recording it because I dont know if Ill be able to watch the whole damn thing in one siting. Julia Roberts and Jim Parsons are going to win Emmys for this, and rightly so.
