Watching the Academy Awards always reminds me of my most memorable - TopicsExpress

Watching the Academy Awards always reminds me of my most memorable AA evening in 1978 when I did not watch the show. I and my wife had just returned from Hawaii and spent the weekend in LA to visit her brother in Loma Linda. On Sunday I called Martin Sheen (whom I knew from the film Badlands). He invited to his house in Malibu that evening which was the same evening of the AAs. (They were held in April then). Instead of watching the ceremonies we sat in his kitchen drinking his favorite beverage - Perrier Water while his kids were in the living room watching the show. Every once in a while his son, Charlie, (12) would come in and tell us who had won. The next day Martin was scheduled to go in to the studio to start looping the film Apocalypse Now, which even then was being touted as the next years Best Picture winner - and indeed it was. When I told Martin I expected to see him there picking up his Best Actor Oscar he replied that he didnt believe in competing for such awards. And in a trade publication the following year I read where he had quietly advised the Academy to remove his name from consideration. We spent the evening listening to stories about the filming and Marlon Brando. I wonder what Martins son Charlie is doing now.
