Watching the Remembrance Day services and as always, Im humbled by - TopicsExpress

Watching the Remembrance Day services and as always, Im humbled by the actions of those who serve and have served. I am, however, equally as disgusted by the whole process. One that continues to perpetuate the acceptability of war and conflict. I remember, when I was small, thinking that I wanted to be just like the old heroes. Having spoken to many of them since, they almost all carry survivor guilt, a keen sense of loss for those that are not here, guilt for things theyve done and in many cases a sense of confusion. Can we not have a conversation about the necessity of conflict? Why do we still keep this idea alive? I have seen far too many people broken by conflict and I know that I have seen only a minuscule fragment of those affected permanently by such horror. I wouldnt dare to dismiss the sacrifice made by so many, nor their belief that they do or have done the right thing. I question the political machine that creates and perpetuates that belief. I question the morality of those in power that send young men and women to do these horrific things to other human beings and witness these horrific things being done to them. Why do we still allow this to happen? Why is it that we still remember leaders from times of war, but peacetime leaders fade? Those that cause the deaths of thousands are revered, yet those that avoid the bloodshed are forgotten. We have our priorities wrong when we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than two men holding hands. We teach children all about wars, but not about the human cost.
