Watching the coverage for GP Richmond, and recently going balls - TopicsExpress

Watching the coverage for GP Richmond, and recently going balls deep in modern cards has made me think a lot lately. I hate how expensive some of the cards are, and I am thankful that I bought all of the cards I did before they went up in price! I think for our small community of players the cost of initially building a collection of cards for formats other than standard stop us from being interested. Its hard for me to justify to anyone that its worth spending $800.00 on a set of goyfs when they have bills to pay. What if I told you that some of the cards in your standard collection could be that price in a few years? How many people do you know say man, if I wouldnt have sold all of my fetches I would be sitting on a gold mine or do you know how many force of wills I used to have?. Im a victim to it. I have jumped in and out of magic since 98, and every time I sell my collection. Every time I come back I wish I wouldnt have sold my last collection. Now, I can understand getting burnt out, or an emergency comes up where you need money in a pinch, but I can tell you from experience Magic the Gathering is much more than a game, its an investment. This game is not going anywhere any time soon, with the video games, and the movie coming out, it is only going to get more popular. If you like modern, dont be afraid to invest your money, and dont sell your cards when you get burnt out of standard. This format is growing, and changing every day. Im interested in modern bc I played with a lot of the popular modern cards while they were in standard, but even new players, I promise that it will be worth every penny. The thing about older formats, unlike standard, the staples dont really diminish in value. You only have to buy them once! Cards in standard will rotate in and out, and it can be expensive to keep up with, but modern and legacy will always stay in tact. What made me write about this is seeing how fun some of these decks look, looking up prices, and thinking man, I wish these cards werent so expensive or Id play x. Why should that stop me from playing the deck that I want to play? I dont think it should. Modern isnt going anywhere, so I told myself that I will do my best to get playsets of x,y,z by my birthday in November. I love this game, and I love playing it. So investing $1600.00 into 12 cards might make outsiders think Im crazy, I can guarantee that I wont regret it. But thats just my deck that I want to play, there are much cheaper decks for modern. I built living end for close to $300.00. The deck is great. Affinity is probably around $400.00, and those two decks can win against anything. If anyone ever wants to play modern proxy up a deck, and come play test, see if you like it before you invest. Im usually at the shop wed-sat mid afternoon-close. To the new players: If you want some financial tips with your standard collection, I have a few opinions on what will go up Courser of Kruphix, Swan Song, Anger of the Gods, Abrupt Decay, Scavenging Ooze, Thoughseize, Mutavault, Shock Lands, Supreme Verdict, Detention Sphere, and Counterflux My thoughts on standard- Standard is pretty boring, the new set didnt change anything. Mono black devotion is still the best deck, Control still exists, Red can still win, and Green is flashy. I cant wait for the next set already Limited- White Heroic is just broke, sno nuff Modern- Affinity can beat anything, it doesnt lose to a deck but rather cards, same with pod. Birthing pod is the most resilient deck, followed by twin. Control and jund are fading away, and zoo is getting some love. I think zoo sucks, idc if its big or little zoo. Sorry everyone Im bored at work... enjoy (notice how I said above I wrote this because I seen how fun some of the decks look, Magic is a game, if youre not having fun, you arent doing something right)
