Watching this video makes a good metaphor for so many of our observations in life: Much of what surrounds us are patterns of interactions, among people, things, and events, and often these appear random, unrelated, unpredictable. If you started this video at the 30-second mark and watched for just a few seconds, you might get an entirely different impression of what was going on; rather than a very directly interrelated series of movements caused by a single action, you might walk away thinking each ball had been set into motion separately on its own path, completely unrelated to the others. If we could observe long enough, perhaps the seemingly-random patterns that make up so much of what goes on around us would become clear. Sometimes I wonder what it would take to be able to do the equivalent of watching just the middle of this video, and be able, from our limited perspective, to observe a slice of time, and from it discern the patterns that occurred before and will occur after.
