Water - It’s a human right! It is not a consumer choice! it’s a necessity…an everyday essential! There was a Public Meeting held tonight in Ringsend Community Centre to discuss “How We Resist Water Charges” with Cllr John Lyons. The aim of the meeting is to build resistance against Irish Water. WHO: Irish Water are changing water from a human right to a commodity, which in turn will be privatised! WHEN: In two weeks you will be paying for every litre of water in your home. Water will be a utility rather than a human right. 1.6 million homes will be metered. WHY: This charge is another consequence of the bailout! There are lazy justifications to the implementation of the new water charges. Currently 1.23 billion is currently spent on water from “general taxation”. So this new charge is in fact a “double taxation”. Ireland already has the highest rate of indirect taxes in Europe! Why should we pay for “blue gold”? The pack is trawling in information that the census doesn’t provide. What is the threat or penalty for not returning the pack? Does it mean you won’t receive your allowance? The Price – a person uses on average 66,000 litres of water a year. This could cost up to €322 per person per year. So with a promise of €146 allowance it’s estimated we will pay €176 per person (children free (for now)). The proposed pricing structure has NOT yet been confirmed yet!! There is money to be made by Irish water and in 8 to 10 or so years, it will be privatised …. which means increased charges and reduced service. WHAT: What can you do? Reject from the get go. Don’t become a customer of Irish Water. The only benefits are financial reward to Irish Water. Let’s lay down a marker to state that this is unacceptable. Scrap the water charge! WHERE: Where can you stand up to this? Don’t fear it….fight it! Sympathy is not prevention…..Joe Duffy won’t fix this with sympathy and air time. It’s in your hands! Take action! Go to the protests! There’s one on the 11th October in the Garden of Remembrance at 2pm. We have a “Right 2 Water”! I’m anti water charge….are you?
