Water Advisory: UCONN is issuing a Stage IA Water Conservation - TopicsExpress

Water Advisory: UCONN is issuing a Stage IA Water Conservation Alert because seasonally dry conditions have reduced area streamflows. We are enlisting your cooperation to conserve water until further notice. The University’s water supply remains adequate to meet current and forecasted system demands and any emergency needs such as fire suppression. In addition, since June, the University has used reclaimed water in place of potable water at the UCONN central utility plant, historically the water system’s largest consumer. The result is that we have lessened the amount of groundwater pumped from our wellfields by 17% compared to the same period last year and by more than 20% compared to three years ago. Even though we have significantly reduced our use of potable water, every drop saved lessens demand on our wellfields and provides an additional margin to support aquatic life in area streams. Therefore, given current streamflow conditions and weather forecast, we are asking our students, faculty, staff and our off-campus municipal, commercial, and residential users to be conscientious of their daily water use and to conserve water voluntarily by: * Taking shorter showers * Running dishwashers and clothes washing machines with full loads * Shutting off water while washing dishes, shaving, brushing teeth, and lathering up to wash hands, rather than running the water continuously * Avoiding vehicle washing or power-washing homes and other buildings * Not using water to clean sidewalks, driveways and roads * Reducing, to the extent possible, the watering of lawns, recreational and athletic fields, gardens, or other landscaped areas (if watering is essential, late-evening hours are best) * Not using public water to fill residential swimming pools By issuing the Stage IA Water Conservation Alert, we encourage you to reduce how much water you use. Thank you for your help. We appreciate your cooperation. UCONN is actively monitoring conditions and will continue to provide updates as conditions change.
