Water, and our rights to it : Yesterday I sat and watched a Labour Minister of State explain that water, clean water costs a lot of money to produce. I tend to agree with him. He also mentioned taxation relation the clean potable water. However , he did mention, or perhaps he forgot that this year alone the citizens of Ireland have already spent 1.2 billion euro on water. That same money , along with 180 million, and all the other millions could just as easily have been spent on setting up a state owned, state run public utility, what else are household taxes for, where does that money go? Instead FG/LAB have invented a new Quango, which in turn will become a private company trading for profit and answerable to its shareholders, instead of being answerable to the Irish people. Irish citizens will still have to pick up all the bills for leaks etc. Irish Water will just take the profits. They will be free to charge what they like when they like. The government, our sovereign government, will receive little if any benefit from Irish Water by the time we have plugged all the leaks , repairs etc. Would it not be better to have a state run, state controlled water board, directly answerable to the taxpayer and voter. Should not the responsibility of the health and welfare of our people lie not with a private company that can be sold or taken over if market conditions suit them best at the time, would it not be wiser, safer, better to leave our natural resources in the hands of the people of Ireland?
