Water problems are faced every where in the state of Meghalaya, to solve this acute problem the Garo Hills Water Management and Preservation committee, Resubelpara in the past held a meeting to work out the water crisis in the district, also encouraged to plant trees around. As a short term measure, the meeting decided to explore possibilities of constructing bore wells in and around the district besides shutting down of public taps during the crisis period to prevent unnecessary wastage of water. The meeting also decided to ask the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council to identify and notify catchment areas besides asking the Nokmas and Sordars to plant trees around the catchment areas and to restrict Jhum cultiviation around those areas. The meeting also stressed on the need for water harvesting and storage of rain water to be taken up under the Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Promotion programme, adding that the nokmas would be urged to create awareness among the people. The meeting also decided to involve the departments of Soil and Water Conservation, Agriculture and others as a part of the committee which would meet once in every three months.
