Water snakes, Nerodia sipedon. Ive posted about them before, but theyre just too much fun not to post about again. Water snakes are not venomous, but their saliva contains an anti-coagulant, a chemical that prevents the blood from clotting. As a result, bites from a water snake take an unusually long time to stop bleeding. They arent dangerous, but the excessive bleeding is frightening enough to remind a predator (or nosy human) to mind its own business. Its often said that water snakes are aggressive, and its true that they are more likely to bite than many other snakes when grasped. But in reality, they are no more aggressive than mice. A mouse will probably bite you if you pick it up (and for good reason!), but we wouldnt dream of calling mice aggressive. Water snakes arent aggressive either. They just really, really dont like being picked up by strangers.
