Waterloo, NY: Federally Recognized Birthplace of Memorial Day Recently, I had the opportunity to view a very special video of the Centennial Memorial Day ceremony in the Village of Waterloo in 1966, the first ceremony held after Waterloo was designated as the federally recognized birthplace of Memorial Day by the United States Congress and President Lyndon B. Johnson. In this historically important video, Congressman Sam Stratton, who introduced the resolution proclaiming Waterloo as the Federally recognized birthplace Memorial Day, reads and presents the resolution to the Village during a memorable ceremony. The resolution was unanimously passed by the US Congress and signed by President Johnson in 1966, 100 years after the first ceremony was held in the Village. Waterloo Deputy Mayor Dave Duprey and Congressman Sam Strattons son, Brian Stratton, the current Director of the New York State Canal Corporation, shared with me the copy of this historical video.
