Waterloos Adventure Walk: Hi Katie! Thanks to your generous - TopicsExpress

Waterloos Adventure Walk: Hi Katie! Thanks to your generous sponsorship of a dog at Richmond Animal Care & Control, I was able to get one of their fine residents out for a few hours! Not long after getting Waterloo out, I was already thinking of what to say to you about him-- I couldnt wait to get home and begin to tell you about him and our time together without sounding like a braggart. Waterloo is a gorgeous, five year-old gray pit mix with a huge head, antennae-like ears that seem to be constantly looking for something and grabbing eyes that demand your attention, before disarming you into being convinced that hes nothing more than a love-seeking chunk. Lucky for us, he is exactly that! Hes tough-looking with all the muscle in his torso and especially in his back legs, but he proved that all he commands is love and affection without really trying to. He was the only one not barking when I went to his ward to scoop him up, and I didnt know if he would be one of those pups that breaks out of their shell and goes to full blast once outside of the kennel, but I was happy to break him out! He pulled a little bit as we made our way out of the facility, and then we walked around outside so he could poop and pee before we bolted for some fun times at Reedy Creek! I opened the door for him and he hopped right into the back seat without needing any assistance. Waterloo came up to the front with me a few times, nearly resting his big head on my shoulder while we drove and watched the traffic around us. Once we arrived, he got excited all over again and jumped out when I opened the door up for him. We began our hike down towards Belle Isle, and he was absolutely delightful on a leash! He didnt pull hard, he kept looking up to check to see if I was there, and he had a deep interest in every little thing we would pass. He loved to climb up on tree stumps and raised concrete, and seemed entranced in the creek we walked parallel to. We stopped and he looked like he was trying to figure out something he was hearing, which I could only assume was the sound of the creek water rolling over the rocks! The two of us walked down to the exposed rocks, and his tail swung side to side as he dipped his nose into puddles and sniffed the rushing river water that hed either never seen before, or hadnt in a long enough time for him to approach it cautiously. I stepped over some gaps to see how hed handle them, and he happily leaped clear over them! While we played down there, we even crossed paths with a few of his mates from RACC, and after some consideration, we tried a slow introduction of the dogs and they all did wonderfully! Waterloo was great with everybody he encountered during the entire trip. We eventually had to make our trek back, and he just looked like he was enjoying life completely. He wasnt the smiliest dog Id met, but he had a trot in his step and the wag in his tail and a look in his eyes when we made contact that said plenty. We got back to the truck, and he sat up in the back, staring at me while I got us ready to go. I turned around to pet him a little bit before we drove off, and he dug his face into my palm, closing his eyes and groaning a little bit under his closed mouth. I was already starting to feel bad that our time out together was coming to a close! When I brought Waterloo back to his kennel, he walked himself in like a diligent little gentleman, and I got down to his level and he even took the initiative to lean in to get a hug from me. Hes a big, chunky boy that loves a gentle human touch, and I cant do him justice with my words. If you meet him, youll have what I had going through my head too, which was, I need to take you home, today. Katie, I cant thank you enough for sponsoring Waterloos day out. He got fresh air for a much longer period than hes used to, he got spoiled with friendly interaction (and some treats), he was encouraged to go and do what he wanted to his hearts content and he came back to the shelter tired from an outing all about HIM! Hopefully, someone will see his ears that have their own mind and calming eyes and realize this is the guy thats been missing from their lives. Hes so well-behaved and so ready to have someones arm around him while they read, watch TV, talk on the phone or sleep. Your decision to sponsor an Animal Control dog will increase his chances of being seen and heard about, and you may soon be responsible for Waterloos freedom ride home. Thank you again, Katie!
