Watoto died of captivity. Poachers kill elephants in horrible numbers. Zoos kill elephants over decades. Elephants cannot adapt to a zoo environment. Their large brains and large bodies require room to roam and a complex social engagement with family and friends. Watoto had none of the basic elements for healthy, happy elephant life. She was the sole African elephant, and thus the only one of her species, for 44 years (Chai and Bamboo are Asian elephants). She had less than an acre to explore. Nothing ever changed. Live in a closet by yourself for 44 years, see how your health holds up. The zoo will claim that she was old. She was merely middle aged for an elephant in the wild, in terms of overall health. She laid down and she couldnt get up. Her muscles were atrophied after decades of disuse. Watoto died of captivity. Lets honor her by getting her cell-mates, Bamboo and Chai, retired to sanctuary.
