Way back in the days of Al Bevilacqua coaching the then Hofstra - TopicsExpress

Way back in the days of Al Bevilacqua coaching the then Hofstra Dutchmen (now the Pride), I would attend the pre season college clinics at his college. Kevin Glynn would drive us to practice and we would destroy any Nassau/Suffolk kid that got in our way. I enjoyed the opportunity to train with different people. What impressed me the most was a motivational saying that was posted on the wall. Starting from the bottom of the wall and rising to the top there were four boxes. the bottom box said team member. The next highest box said conference champ, while the box above it said All American. The highest box said National Champion in capital letters. I looked at that wall and said thats where Im going, National Champion! Here lies the problem with most athletes. Their goals are far too low and they never truly challenge themselves to venture into uncharted waters. Maybe they do not believe in themselves or possibly theyre not athletic enough to feel they can accomplish high goals. They may not believe they can achieve lofty goals. All of these reasons are weak, at best. Champions are not born, they are produced by hard work and an undying dedication to their goals. Yes, some champions need to be lucky, as well. The reality is if you have a plan, with a support group that nurtures your goals (parents, coaches, and teammates), you can achieve just about anything including winning championships. Of course, championships do not grow on trees and there are no guarantees that your dedication will garner the top honor. Im sure there will be others with similar goals and aspirations. Those with a strong faith know that so many things can be achieved with the opportunities youve been given in life. Strength of purpose may be the single most important asset to an aspiring champion. The reality is this, you control your own destiny. By taking that first step of commitment to training and learning you are separating yourself from the competition. You will have many obstacles along the way. They are just opportunities to learn more about yourself and for personal growth. I pose this question to every aspiring champion, why not you as the person standing on the top of the podium? As I shared today with my sons high school team, the end of the year state series is rapidly approaching. On every award will be a placement, not a name. Those who want something bad enough will have to take their placement. You going to have to go out and earn it. Who cares what your record is in-season. The state series is a stand alone venture that creates legends. The question why not you is real. In the end, win matches, get your hand raised on a consistent basis, and be remembered for your efforts!
