Way to go, Beto ORourke! Just last month on CNNs State of the Union, you managed a rare public relations feat: obliquely endorsing the El Paso Chihuahuas—the self-styled big dogs of West Texas—while answering a timely question on LeBron Jamess recent homecoming to Cleveland. I also watched the other segments of this State of Union episode, during which you took courageous stances in favor of both comprehensive immigration reform and ensuring that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides quality healthcare to Americas heroes. Indeed, despite having less than two years of experience in the United States House of Representatives, freshman Congressman Beto ORourke has shown to be one the more gifted members of the 113th Congress and surely ranks among the best national legislators ever to come out of El Paso. Id say that not since Ralph Yarborough has a Texas Democrat made such an indelible debut in U.S. congress. Watching this segment, Im ever grateful for both switching my allegiance to the Democratic Party as a New Yorker in 2011 and for supporting the congressional candidacy of Mr. ORourke, who formerly represented my west El Paso district in City Council. Mr. ORourkes eventual campaign against 16-year incumbent Silvestre Reyes eventually garnered national attention for its innovative use of grassroots support to defeat a ranking member of the U.S. House. In the intervening years, Congressman ORourke has done more to raise my home citys profile than any politician in recent memory. All I can say is: #thankyou, sir, for letting me be part of your team. I now have a real chance to give back to our home city, which I surprisingly missed so much while out East. https://youtube/watch?v=3ovpBm_63Dk
