Way, way too much cool shit happened last night at our Shakers Bar and Grill 1 year anniversay shindig. Theres a really long list of people to thank for making this such a successful endeavor; not just for last night, but our entire first year. So Ill skip the Oscar speech wherein everyone sentient creature in the known universe gets mentioned. Mostly because you know who you are ... Not just all of you whove shown up week after week, but also the people who come by when they can, and help us build the diversity I had in mind when I came up with this idea. I never wanted this to be just an open-mic... not just a place to come and play and cheer each other on... not just a place to make new friends and network... not just a place to try out new shit on our peers... not even just to encourage each other. All of these things. There is nothing in music that trumps performance ... being able to convince listeners/watchers that youve got the goods. All the technical expertise in the universe, all the passion, even all the restraint, is meaningless if you cant get your audience to buy into it. And, contrary to the popular belief that I personally would prefer artists to do their own material; that thats what sets them apart (and I readly admit to harboring that feeling to an extent), its utterly secondary to ones ability to make themselves a solitary entity... one who performs as only he or she can. And without fail, you all do. So, in the most meaningful sense, our first year has been off the charts. Because you all have left a musical mark. Sometimes its been a sloppy mess (not you guys ... the process), but that is precisely how music and its world should be... a sloppy mess of ideas looking for and finding hosts (thatd be you guys) that absorb, mangle, mutate, masticate, and breath life into them, with little flickers of genius-dust that youve somehow pulled out of the air. Im very proud of my friends. Thank you all.
