Wayne Rooney described Manchester United’s defeat to Liverpool as a “nightmare” and one of the worst days of his career. Victory for Liverpool saw them move up to second spot and close the gap on leaders Chelsea to four points, with a game in hand. United have lost nine times in the Premier League this season, the most they have suffered since 2001-02, and must win all of their remaining nine games to avoid their lowest points total in 21 years.
