I sort of see it as being a bowl (say, of water). We are not the source of the quenching of their thirst, but we keep the water from being all over the floor, and thus a little more easily accessible for them (who may or may not have understanding of how to get a drink for themselves, or are having a hard time lapping it up off the floor - LOL).
