We Indians derive their daily dose of gossip from learning who topped the IIT-JEE and where they are from and all about their lives all the way unto who pocketed the most money. Theres no point denying it. Theres a reason the media publishes what they do: The audience loves it. And THAT is disgraceful. Ask yourself - has a great scientific discovery ever been highlighted in the newspaper? Whats the last one you remember? NONE. I know a lot of people in India, reading this thread or otherwise, could name 3-4 of the IIT-JEE toppers and blurt out how much theyre making. Take some time to contemplate. Is your life more important or the IITians? Why do you fawn over them so much? There are many many non-IITians doing much greater things, and if it matters, earning much greater money. Not only are you stuffing the IITians with more ego than they deserve, youre ruining the youth of the nation. Young individuals all over the world want to be •Artists •Authors •Sociologists •Actors •You name it But ever since theyre 10, its people like us that drive into their mind the need to an engineer. Pushing them all towards the one rat race they dont need to be a part of. I know lawyers and economists in India who earn 5 times the amount as these IITians do, with social skills to spare. I know authors and poets whod be happy with what theyre doing with their lives if their parents approved of it. I know we grew up thinking the same thing. We asked yourself: Why do our parents make a big deal out of this IIT shit? But you know what - were going to turn into the same parents yourself. Look at us. Theres a Quora thread talking about IIT salaries. What happened to science? Learning? Discovering new things? The finer things in life. Nobody from any other country has the kind of sick attitude we do. Even the other Asians - Chinese people , Japanese people and the like - are very very dedicated to academics. But they dont have negotiations about whos earning what. Some things are private for a reason. Do we want to thrive in the self-pity of knowing that there are certain people that come from where you do that earn more than well ever earn in a lifetime? NO. Then stop caring. Live your life your way. Aim to learn, aim to succeed. Money will follow.
