We Native people are all in this together. Colonization is evil. There are so many lies about ourselves that we believe. For instance that all of us were worthless drunks after contact. Did you know that in Sitka, during Russian occupation, the Russians were such drunks that the officers had to hire Natives to work because they were the sober ones? We do know that many of our ancestors fought to the death to keep outsiders from claiming our land. The Aleuts are described as a passive people, easily enslaved, but the men complied with the Russians in order to keep their families alive. They were willing to do what was necessary to protect loved ones from the savage newcomers who showed them evil ways never experienced up until that time. Every Native nation in Alaska has their stories, some more dramatic than others. Today we live in the world the outsiders have created from our land and they fight tooth and nail to keep us away from our traditions and Nativeness. The government spends millions trying to save us from ourselves. yet, imagine what would happen if we all disappeared, tens of thousands would be out of their job of promoting wellness and delivery from products they brought to us. Alaska would collapse without us. implode, nothing left, nada, zip, zero zilch.
