We Need A Community Soundtrack of Hope 1 By the rivers of Babylon— there we sat down and there we wept when we remembered Zion. 2 On the willows* there we hung up our harps. 3 For there our captors asked us for songs, and our tormentors asked for mirth, saying, ‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion!’ 4 How could we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land? - Psalm 137 NSRV Do you see and feel something positive happening in our community? I do. I see and feel a movement of AWARENESS and ENGAGEMENT rising up. What about you? There are a lot of folks being re-energized for their work and folks discovering a fresh call to bring life to their community. What is rising up is beautiful and inspiring. And some of us are finding each other and collaborating our efforts. Beautiful. Inspiring. As I consider movements of the past and what is presently happening a thought came to me: Every powerful movement had a soundtrack! In the above Psalm the Israelites were in a predicament. They are trying to make sense of life in a strange land. They are captives and recipients of injustice. Their captors and oppressors ask them to sing a song. The Israelites ask, how can we sing a song of the Lord in such a messed up situation? What kind of song can we sing? Indeed. What kind of songs do you sing in the midst of injustice and oppression? During the Civil Rights movement there were many many songs that were inspired by the cause for freedom and justice. Remember We Shall Overcome, This Little Light of Mine or Sam Cookes famous A Change Is Gonna Come? Or Marvin Gayes Whats Going on?. These songs were among the many anthem songs of the Civil Rights movement. Change was in the air. And the change that was coming had a soundtrack. I believe we are now in such a moment in our community. We all are energized, organized, getting organized, connecting with each other around very important issues in our community: community presence, violence, illiteracy, poverty, mentorship, economic development, voting, spiritual renewal, etc.. The list is long. We are in the middle of some kind of awakening, a movement. Hmmm. Soundtrack. Movement. Awakening. Turnaround. Questions for YOU: What is our soundtrack? What would a community soundtrack of hope look here? What specific tracks would YOU place on a playlist? Wed love to hear from YOU! #armyoflove
