We Remember Our Shipmates A few years ago, a former crewmember of USS Voge created a group page on Facebook. He labeled it “Voge from ’80’s to ‘90”. As the membership in the group grew the comments back and forth were those of once young sailors who savored the memory of shipboard life experiences. At some point, a shipmate asked to join even though “I served on Voge well before the 1980’s”. He was welcomed and the group name was changed to read “USS Voge from beginning to end”. Suspect John did not imagine what would be result of his act of creating a group on Facebook. And George, probably does not realize the impetus he provided. Today, over 700 USS Voge shipmates have been located and plans are being made for a second reunion in Norfolk this coming October. We share this background information while pausing to reflect on the reconnection we have had with our Voge shipmates. Though each of us has good and bad memories of days onboard USS Voge there is a common theme. It seems the one thing said by all is the value they place upon the memories of shipmates and the time shared on Voge’s deck plates. Each of us remain imperfect men - - we were, and are at heart, sailors after all. Imperfection does not matter among friends, liberty partners, men trusted to do their jobs and duties. After all, each of us are men of honor. Thanks to the collaborative efforts and input of many Voge shipmates the opportunity to reconnect is being made possible. In the spirit of reunion and remembering, a team of shipmates is focused on resolving the status “trying to locate” shown on our roster. At times, the outcome of the research are the words “he is deceased”. This Memorial Day weekend join us, your shipmates, as we pause to remember each of these men who as friends were a part of our lives and as shipmates gave life to our ship.
