We adore this photo of the gorgeous Ripon Cathedral in the snow (well, its technically frost, but its sufficient enough to pass our white dusting requirements!). Thank you to the team at the Cathedral for sharing such an atmospheric snowy shot with us :) Ripon Cathedral was founded by St Wilfrid (c.634-709), who brought craftsmen from Europe to build a new stone church on this site. It was dedicated to St Peter in 672. Of this original building, only the Saxon crypt survives. The present church contains several architectural styles. The transepts (the ‘arms’ of a cross-shaped church) date from the late 1100s, and show a mixture of rounded Norman arches and later pointed Gothic arches. The west front (1220s) is a splendid example of the Early English Gothic style. Ripon is a living church and the nave is where the main service takes place on a Sunday and many events are hosted. On the stone benches around the walls you can see the colourful Millennium cushions, which tell the story of Ripon, starting from near the font. And as you can see, its worth a visit in the snowy (or frosty!) season!
