We agree with Breast Cancer Action that telling ALL women to take a test for the breast cancer genes (BRCA1 & 2) is the wrong recommendation. The study only focused on Ashkenazi Jewish Israeli women—a group who already have a much higher likelihood of testing positive— we cannot extrapolate these results for all women! An interesting finding of the study that’s been overlooked in the coverage is that women with the BRCA gene mutations born AFTER 1958 had almost a 4x higher risk of breast cancer versus those born before 1958. Damage from environmental factors including exposure to toxic chemicals and radiation combined are likely contributing to this increase.
