We all have defining moments in our lives, not just once, but many - TopicsExpress

We all have defining moments in our lives, not just once, but many times across our years. Tonight (Friday Night) I experienced yet another, but a very poignant one amongst those I have experienced in my time. I received a phone call at 5.30 Pm from Mong (Green gecko kid ..teenager.. but the bane of my life in my early years at gecko where she had decided, in my English classes, that a 5 minute attention span was sufficient for her before she started disrupting classes ... a one girl ‘Miss Destructo’ if you will. “Hello Doug, this is Mong”...”yes Mong, what can I help you with”...... “Doug can you come out to Green gecko right now” .... “???sure Mong, give me 5 minutes & I will be there”. Well, Avee & I are on a little break, from everything, so I have not been out to gecko for more than a week. I arrive at gecko around 6.00PM to find all the kids, hanging around waiting for my arrival ...Hmmm, must be a ‘good bye mum’ as she is heading off Sunday for a holiday with her fav. Uncle. Mong steps forward...”Doug, it was your 65th Birthday last Monday but we have not seen you & we have something for you, Happy Birthday Doug from all the Gecko kids” ... & with that she handed me a package, wrapped in a Krama. It was a book, some 70 pages plus, each page, a letter from the kids wishing me a Happy Birthday. To say I ‘teared up’ would be an understatement, for when it comes to these amazing young people who have suffered so much in their young lives, & continue to face many daily challenges at the hands of their families, yet demonstrate a strength & resilience that I for one am constantly in awe of, I have a definite weakness. So let me share just a couple of pages out of my birthday gift that will hold a most special place in my heart to the end of my days ....... words I certainly don’t believe I have earned or deserve but, by the same token, if any of them feel I have contributed in some small way to their feeling of security, a sense of being loved, , of being valued, then I thank them from the depths of my heart, for little do they know, what they have taught me over the past 8 years, how they have changed my life for the better & how they have taught me that Life Is What You Make It......
