We all have places we’d like to explore, places we just - TopicsExpress

We all have places we’d like to explore, places we just haven’t gotten to yet, for a variety of reasons. One reason we might consciously or unconsciously avoid a place: it seems inaccessible. That’s often the case with places that have a wilderness designation. By definition, wilderness areas are those where the visible impact of man is minimal to nonexistent. Generally, that means trails that are neither blazed nor maintained — and thus, a challenge to follow. The 17,000-acre Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness in far western North Carolina is a prime example of a place where the urge to explore may have been subdued by the fear of the unknown. There are trails, but those trails sometimes become obscured at creek crossings, in blowdowns, or where few hikers venture on a regular basis. This trepidation of the trail is one reason the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness is one of 12 destinations for our new #GetHiking! North Carolina’s Classic Hikes program in 2015. The goal of the program is to expose you to some of the best hiking in North Carolina, including some hikes you may not be inclined to try on your own. We’ll have a kickoff event for GetHiking! North Carolina’s Classic Hikes in January, but you can sign up for the program today.
