We all know and realize that owning pets of different sorts can bring great happiness into our lives, be it from knowledge, bonding, emotional attachment, etc. Although does this happiness reach into the lives of our pets as well? Are the animals we keep and maintain happy? These are questions Ive come to ask myself since joining groups such as these and being active in the local community. In all honesty, nothing plagues me more than the realization the little critters I keep will never live out a life in the wild, bounding from leaf to leaf in an expansive jungle ecosystem the way nature intended them to. I wish my curiosity for animals lead me to their natural habitats rather than leading them to me. I feel so bad about keeping them locked in their enclosures, that despite what you may say, will never be big enough - no enclosure will match the great outdoors. Ive come to learn, from first hand experience that a lot of times, more so than not, that this industry has grown from not only a passion for the creatures that walk this planet with us, but also from a darker origin of selfishness and exploitation. No man can honestly say they have passion for an animal, when you look in their house and they have tiny racks on top of racks of baby snakes in which they breed to sell to other selfish curious animal lovers; Who will in turn repeat this trend of breed, prison, and sell. Im sorry but breeding copious amounts of animals into a life of captivity shows, in my opinion, the lack of passion, consideration, and empathy to the very animals you confess your love for. With all that being said, I have met a good many amazing people in this hobby, some I like to call my friends! I am also guilty of these selfish acts on nature, I do own 6 frogs after all, but If there were anyway possible I would free my babies in an instant, let them live out the life theyve been evolving for millions of years to live, one of raw nature, in the beautiful jungles from which they came.
