We all know that Astorino faces an especially steep climb in NYC. However, this charter school issue my cause Cuomo lots of political pain. Cuomo backs charters ... the unions loathe them. They are usually the most vocal democrat backers ... maybe this year itll be different. Astorino is for charters ... in specific situations such as failing inner schools or large suburban districts with inner-city-like issues. He is in a favored position and he might well draw those usual democrat voters away. Any weakening of this democrat base is great stuff ... and I hope Astorino clearly makes these distinctions. Properly performing districts ... which dominate NYS ... will never see a charter school. Astorino should stress that as well. Favoring limited and targeted charters is smart education policy ... and smart political policy. In the end ... its kids who will benefit.
