♥♥♥We all know that Zakaat is one of the Pillars of Islam and that it is obligatory upon every able Muslim. But did you ever think about who exactly are the recipients of Zakaat? There are eight categories of people/purposes to whom the Zakaat can be given/used for and there are no exceptions to this eight. the Fuqara (poor), and Al-Masakin (the poor) and those employed to collect (the funds), and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam), and to free the captives, and for those in debt, and for Allahs Cause (i.e. for Mujahidun - those fighting in a holy battle), and for the wayfarer (a traveller who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise. [Surah At-Tawbah09:60] Below is a brief description of the eight categories : 1) The Fuqaraa: These are the extremely poor people. People who are basically homeless without proper shelter or who lives hand to mouth every day without food or sources of income and etc... 2) The Masaakeen: These are poor people, but those who have few possessions. They may have shelter and a meager income, and are just able to afford the basic necessities of life. 3) Those who work in distributing Zakaat:These are the people who are employed to collect the funds for Zakaat, and distribute it among the people who need it. This is basically a small fee or compensation for their services. 4) Those whose hearts need firmness upon Islam: These are the new Muslims, those who have newly entered Islam. 5) Freeing slaves: This is not really applicable in our times because slavery has long been abolished. But if slaves did do exist, then the Zakaat money should be used to set them free. Also, freeing slaves is something that holds immense reward in Islam. 6) Paying debts: These are the people who are in debt and cannot afford the means to settle it on their own. An important point though is that the debt should have a valid Shariah reason, it shouldnt be some ridiculous debt where you go bankrupt buying the latest iPhone or some such thing. 7) In the way of Allah: This is specifically for jihad. It should be used to aid the mujahideen, who are fighting in the way of Allah. The Zakat should be given to them to aid them in getting supplies or weaponry or anything else that they maybe in need of. 8) The traveler who is in need:This is the person who is more or less stranded somewhere or going on a journey where he has limited means or in some cases without any means at all.
