We all should agree that we should not burst crackers in Diwali - TopicsExpress

We all should agree that we should not burst crackers in Diwali and cause damage to the environment. In the most simple and agreeable terms, that would take care of not only air/noise pollution but also take care of child labour (and in these days of Chinese crackers, save foreign exchange) also. Similarly, there can’t be any two opinions as to why we should not immerse chemical laced idols of deities in lake rivers/ wells and in our precious water bodies. We should not do kite-flying as nylon (or even cotton) thread can cause harm to birds. We should not distribute Aapta leaves on Dussehra as it causes large-scale destruction of these trees and thereby environment. Year-after-year, I have been seeing Aapta trees located even deep in forests, are brutally butchered for the purpose. We should not encourage snake-charming during Naagpanchmi festival for obvious reasons. There is even a rising feeling that we should use re-usable plastic material instead of bamboo for funeral processions! We should not allow blowing of loud-speakers beyond permissible decibels which cause noise pollution. So we should not rightly celebrate our festivals in the traditional ways and find out alternate means to celebrate these festivals instead. There can’t be any two opinions on these simple facts, I suppose. We have been hearing this since last so many years but there is no effective or willful ban or control on practices during our festivals. If something causes so much of the irreparable destruction, degradation, pollution to our environment, society and economy then why can’t we summarily ban manufacture/import and bursting of all smoke emitting, noise causing, poison-spreading crackers? Can we not stop importing and manufacturing of crackers? Can we not enforce production of POP idols? Even earthen idols are no better according to me. Lots of discarded flowers, pooja material, plastic decorations and Sindoor etc. goes along with it. So can we not stop idol immersion in lake/river waters? Why can’t we effectively ban kite-flying altogether? What hindrances could be there for stopping import of nylon manja or production of similar indigenous material altogether? We have successfully banned Sati-system and bali (animal slaughter) in the past. Are the long term and irreparable effects of pollution any less dangerous than these bad traditions? I just wonder how many more years we have to hear this? It is damn frustrating to see this erosion to environment years after years.
